A shopoholic's shrine can be found in Canton, Texas at First Monday Trade Days

Ready to test the “It’s better in Texas” claim? Canton’s First Monday Trade Days lives up to the hype, and has been doing so for over 150 years. And it’s happening this weekend til Sunday.

With over 5,000 vendors offering both new and used items like saddles, jewelry, candles, furniture, baby items and original artworks, finding a deal or two is easy. Looking for such novelties as artificial fruit and veggies, cheerleading uniforms, light switch covers or wigs? They are here too. Hungry? Food like smoked turkey legs and Navajo fry bread help fuel the bargain bonanza.

The entire event happens over 100 acres and is designated on areas and buildings like the Old Mill, the Mountain and Dog Alley. Most vendors are at the original Fair Grounds.

How did First Monday receive its name when it is actually held Thursday through Sunday? Back in the mid 19th century circuit judges would come into town on a Monday, and the townspeople realized it was a merchant’s dream. Although now the flea market is not open on Mondays – it is easy to figure it out when it occurs. Locate the first Monday of every month, and go to the preceding Thursday – Sunday.

Still confused?

The next three markets are as follows

February 2 – 4, 2007

March 2 – 4, 2007

April March 30 – April 1, 2007
