The internet is filled with deals that seem too-good-to-be-true, so it can be a bit overwhelming navigating them all. Here's an easy guide to getting affordable airfare.

From comparing and contrasting different booking sites, to planning your travels at the last possible minute, there are all kinds of simple ways to save money on airfare.

Nab Last Minute Airfare Deals on Travel Booking Sites

The best deals come to those who wait. While many can't plan their vacation at the very last minute, nearly every booking site advertises dirt-cheap airfare deals at the very last minute. If a vacationer's flexible with their travel dates (or even their destination), they should wait to book their flight within two weeks of leaving. If one's headed to a popular city, there's little chance they'll come up empty. Or that their pocketbook will end up empty, for that matter. The only situation that this tends not to work in is when booking a last-minute holiday flight (around Christmas or Thanksgiving, for example).

Find Budget Airlines

It's the little-known budget airlines that have some of the cheapest airfare around. However, they may not be super visible on booking sites like Expedia. A little research goes a long way, so just find out what budget airlines serve the cities of interest.

Compare Your Low-Cost Airfare Options

It's a simple suggestion, but one that too many overlook. To get the best airfare deal, do a little shopping around. Compare sites like Hotwire, Expedia, TravelZoo, Orbitz, and even airline product companies (like Flyhub) to see how much you're really saving. Watch out for hidden booking fees and taxes, though.

Choose Layovers

Make a few stops along the way. The more layovers, the cheaper the flight. So, if for those who don't mind getting to know a few local airports well, this is a great way to go.

Travel Mid-Week

Tuesday through Thursday are the best days to be up in the air. Prices on airfare increase dramatically from Friday to Monday.

Travel During the Off-Season of Your Destination

Every vacation spot (well, nearly every vacation spot) has an off-season, when it's not as crowded with tourists as usual. This may or may not be due to the weather or area events. Some destinations sport beautiful weather and fun-filled attractions year-round, but still have an off-season. How is this possible? It has to do with the collective schedules of travelers everywhere. Go to Disney World after the kids are back in school, or visit New York (a popular Christmas destination) in the summer.

Ask a Travel Agent

Sometimes it's the insiders who are sitting on the hottest bargains. Planning to spend $1000 or more on airline tickets? Then it's worthwhile to explore airfare options with a travel agent before booking.
