Kansas City is known for its steak and barbecue, but if meat isn't the main attraction, there are plenty of other options.

Restaurants choices are so plentiful in Kansas City that anyone can find the meal they are currently craving. Entire neighborhoods house a variety of the latest chains next door to the local favorites. Venues like the Country Club Plaza, Westport and the Power and Light District make a movable feast a possibility. Start out with drinks and appetizers at one locale, move on to another for the main course and finish in a third with liqueur or coffee and dessert.

Eating out in Kansas City, Missouri

The Country Club Plaza, a popular area on 47th Street, features some of the best local restaurants with a couple of upscale chains such as the Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Chang’s. The Classic Cup Sidewalk Café offers a favorite breakfast menu and the best vantage point for people watching. Lunch and dinner feature chef’s specialties, calzones, salad with freshly prepared house dressings and a full bar. Starker’s Restaurant is owned and operated by Chef John McClure, a native of Kansas who grew up on a cattle ranch. His varied menu includes seafood, lamb and classic recipes from world cuisine, but if steak is a passion, Chef McClure will not disappoint. For high tea, check into the Intercontinental Hotel’s Oak Room from 2 to 4 p.m. on weekends. Dainty pastries and tiny delicacies accompany real tea in pre-warmed china pots.

In the Kansas City Power and Light District, food and fun are the theme. Raglan Road has an Irish theme and menu. The Peach Tree Restaurant offers Southern favorites like sweet potato fries and fried okra as side dishes to its steak, pasta and signature soul food. For dessert the bread pudding and sweet potato pie will tempt, but the signature peach cobbler may be the top choice. Maker’s Mark Bourbon House and Lounge is known for its bourbon selection, but the food is excellent as well. Who could resist a Tipsy Chicken Sandwich for lunch or grilled whiskey salmon for dinner? Like all great Kansas City restaurants, the steak and chops are the center piece of the Maker’s Mark menu, which includes an impressive wine list as well.

Restaurants in Kansas City, KansasWhen headed west to the Kansas City Speedway, the place to stop for a bite or a grand meal is the Legends of Village West complex. Kids will love T-Rex, with its huge dinosaur décor and varied menu. Along with the pizza and burgers there are salads and interesting entrées for adult palettes. Everyone will go for the Chocolate Extinction dessert. If sushi is more to your taste, try Stix. Stix is a pan-Asian restaurant, serving sushi and Chinese or Japanese specialties. Combinations help the undecided to try it all. Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen is everything the name implies. From blackened seafood to shrimp étouffée, it’s all here. Let the good times roll!

No matter where the visitor lands in the Kansas City area, food and fun are there. The restaurants listed above are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to great food and drink. Here’s a partial list of some other great places to check out.
