Free.
One of my favorite words. Now I realize often what is advertised as "free" ends up either being junk or having a hidden cost. But this coming weekend - two events epitomize the best in being free. December 2nd's 16th Annual Honey Festival in Minco, OK and on the 3rd head over to Delaware's birding field trip through the Prime Hook National Refuge.
Minco is just 40 miles SW of Oklahoma City, and has the largest honey producing plant in the state. Free (here comes the good part) tours are given at the Ross Honey Plant from 9:00AM - 4:00PM. Also following in the free frenzy the dairy producers will be handing out samples of cheese and other milk products. Here is the land of milk and honey!
And there is more - following the honey bake off - the public is given (drumroll please) free samples from all the entries.
The festival also features an arts and crafts show (holidays are coming), gorgeous quilts (winter's coming), a kiddie tractor pull (tire' em out), a tour of area homes decked out in their holiday finery and much more.
What a honey of a deal!
Now from Minco to Milton.
Milton Delaware is home to the Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge which is part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Dedicated to providing protection and establishing habitat for waterfowl, water birds (like the American Black Duck and Wood Duck) and the thousands of migratory birds which fly up and down the Atlantic yearly.
So come and join in on this noble mission. But you need to be an early bird (sorry, couldn't resist). Call the NWP at (302) 684 - 8419 to get your name on the list.
The field trip will begin at 8:00AM, and leaves from the Refuge Headquarters. It usually lasts about three hours. Dress in layers (don't forget a hat, gloves and above all else binoculars) Light colored clothing is recommended and tuck your pant legs into your socks. Nasty things, like ticks, also live in the Refuge. Since trips go rain or shine - it might also become a "splash hike" so old shoes or boots would be ideal (ahh memories of Girl Scout camp).
Bring a lunch with you and after the hike be sure to enjoy it by the picnic tables - but don't feed the wildlife!
